Award for best experimental work to Carmela Morrone

Congratulations! The Dissertation Award Pneumology 2021 of the ‚Deutsche Lungenstiftung e.V.‘ went to Carmela Morrone. She was awarded for the best experimental work in the overall field of pneumology. The award winners were honored at the 61st Digital Congress of the German Society of Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine on June 4, 2021.

Carmela Morrone was awarded for her dissertation "Cathepsin B, a new player in the progression of Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome". In it, she shows that the cysteine protease cathepsin B plays a crucial role in the progression of the disease - and thus also represents a possible future therapeutic target. This connection is now also being investigated in a DZL-funded clinical study at CPC-M/LMU Klinikum.

Bronchiolitis Obliterans (BOS) is a common complication after lung transplantation and significantly complicates long-term patient survival.

With her dissertation, Carmela Morrone successfully completed her studies in October 2020. She was previously a PhD student in the group of ILBD-/CPC-M Institute Director Ali Önder Yildirim.
