Arunima Sengupta receives DZL Poster Award - Platform Imaging
Arunima Sengupta, PhD student in the core unit "Live Cell Imaging" at the iLBD/CPC and directly supervised by Dr. Gerald Burgstaller, received an award for the best poster of the platform imaging (PLI) at the 7th DZL Annual Meeting, held in Bad Nauheim, Germany, on February 8 and 9, 2018. Arunima Sengupta and Dr. Gerald Burgstaller presented a poster with the title "High-resolution spatial mapping of cellular locations and interactions in a 3D ex-vivo early fibrosis model". By applying high-resolution confocal laser-scanning microscopy on 300 µm thick precision-cut lung slices (PCLS), which provide an arising and exciting new 3D cell culture technology, they were able to image an entire 300 µm-thick 3D volume comprising multiple layers of entire alveoli, bronchioles and interstitial space in unprecedented detail. In the future, they hope to use this exciting 3D ex-vivo model in combination with state-of-the-art microscopy (lightsheet and 2-photon), to study the dynamics and interaction of lung cells in early fibrotic events in real time.
The German Center for Lung Research (DZL) is an association of the leading university and non-university institutions dedicated to lung research in Germany. Using translational research methods, the DZL seeks to jointly develop new approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of serious lung diseases including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, diffuse parenchymal lung disease, end stage lung disease, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, pneumonia, and acute lung injury.
